Summary
The Earth generates a wide variety of background noise through earthquakes and volcanoes, but by far the most common sources are ocean waves rolling onto shore, producing a continuous hum within the Earth in the 0.2 hertz range. For the last five years, the Physics Institute in Zurich examined how this noise might be used as a passive source for oil and gas exploration. The research, using highly sensitive spectrometers positioned over known petroleum deposits, produced some surprising results.
