A joint industry project to advance research and application of low frequency seismic technology in the oil and gas industry
The Low Frequency Seismic Partnership is a joint industry project among oil and gas producers, service provider, and university partners for the research and development of low frequency (LF) seismic technologies for enhanced application to the detection and characterization of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
The consortium was formed in 2009 with a planned three year program into 2012. The LFSP’s technical program consists of the following elements:
- Data acquisition and processing
- Theoretical studies
- Laboratory measurements
- Large variable array field measurements
- Geophysical and geological modeling and numerical studies
Current LFSP members include
- Cairn India
- Chevron
- GDF SUEZ
- E.ON
- PEMEX
- Petronas

Members of the LFS Partnership have the advantage of building on a base of knowledge established through an existing research team and its collective experience and results. Over 20 manyears of research in Low Frequency phenomena forms the base of this consortium through academic partnerships and internal research at Spectraseis.
The first year of the technical program was dedicated to acquiring two low frequency passive seismic data sets in a controlled experiment over a well characterized gas storage reservoir in both the full and drawn down state. Consortium deliverables include the raw data from this experiment along with the processed and interpreted results using standard workflows and research reports including the latest results in numerics/modeling, theoretical concepts, and laboratory measurements. Also included are short courses in low frequency seismic technology.
